What is the contest timing? When does the contest run?
The Local Tastes Recipe Challenge runs from September 4th, 2014 to October 7th, 2014. Finalists will be notified by October 16th, 2014. Finalists Cook off in Kingston, Ontario will take place on October 25th.
Who is eligible for the contest?
The challenge is only open to residents of Ontario and you must be 19 years or older. This contest is for home cooks and culinary students only. Professional cooks and chefs are not eligible.
What are the recipe categories?
Recipes should be submitted in one of 3 categories: Appetizer, Main Course, and Dessert. Two Finalists will be chosen from each category to participate in person at the Finalists Cook off in Kingston. One recipe will be crowned a winner from each category at the Cook off, plus one Grand Prize winner overall. Each submitted recipe must be paired with a recommendation for a Prince Edward County, Ontario wine that is currently available for sale.
How will we pick the finalists and winners? What are the criteria to win?
An expert culinary panel of judges will review all recipes. Criteria for winning the Local Tastes Recipe Challenge will be based on a point system. For a full breakdown of the point system and other contest details please refer to the full Rules & Regulations.
What makes a ‘good’ submission?
We appreciate the beauty of a creative recipe, highlighting fresh local ingredients that are easy to find and form a well thought out dish.
At Local Tastes, we love a good story. We want to hear about how you came up with the idea, what memories may have prompted your wonderful recipe. And what local produce/producers inspired you.
What about a photo?

What is the definition of local ingredients?
For the purpose of this challenge, ingredients and products that are grown or produced in Ontario are considered local.
What is the Finalist Cook Off in Kingston event?
The Finalist Cook Off in Kingston is for the six finalists – two from each category. The event is being held at the Delta Kingston Waterfront Hotel from noon to 2pm on Saturday, October 25th. Media and the public will be invited to participate in the event along with regional and provincial dignitaries.
If you are chosen as a finalist, you must be able to:
1. Attend the cook off event on Saturday October 25th
2. Prepare your dish for the judges the morning of the event at the Delta kitchens
3. Present your dish and story to the judges and the audience (no more than 2 minutes)
4. Be available for media interviews
The chefs at the Delta will be preparing your dish for the audience to try and provide their comments (ballots will be handed out for each member in the audience to vote on their favourite dishes).
Each finalist will be provided complimentary overnight accommodation for 2 at the Delta Kingston Waterfront Hotel on Friday, October 24th. All ingredients will be provided to each finalist for preparation of their dishes for the cook off.
How will the winners be announced?
Winners will be announced live at the Finalist Cook Off in Kingston on October 25th, 2014 and via our website, social media and through our sponsors.
